Red Rock Cemetery/Marker Restoration Project, Red Rock, TX

Old Red Rock Cemetery, Bastrop County, near Red Rock, Texas. Cemetery is located about .25 miles south of Hwy 812 on unpaved road, about 1 mile west of Red Rock From the town of Bastrop, go west on Hwy 71. Turn left on Hwy 20. Turn right on FM 812. Turn left on CR 86. The cemetery is on the right.

Historical Marker:
Old red Rock grew with the crossing of the Austin-Port Lavaca Stagecoach Road (FM 812) in the Bastrop-Gonzalez Trail now CR 229. In 1892 the town moved one mile east to the newly laid railroad. This site with more than 370 graves is the burial place of pioneer settlers, including trail drivers and veterans of the Texas revolution, the Mexican War and the Civil War. The first burial was in 1864. Earlier graves may have been lost when homemade sandstone markers were removed. The cemetery is maintained by descendents of area pioneers.

This cemetery is an example of how last names change spelling, i.e. Tally and Talley, Sarrell, Sorrells, and Sorrell. While surveying this cemetery, several people stopped just to visit and show their children the pioneer gravesites. There is a mailbox for visitors to leave their name and place of residence. This cemetery was surveyed November 1999.
